Olly Richards has hired many staff over the years and has learned a thing or two along the way. Here are his tips to help you find a great video editor.
Five principles of hiring
- Have a positive mindset
- Always be thorough and detailed
- Widen the option pool
- Base your decision on the work involved
- The most important stage of the process begins after the hiring.
Hire your editor using the five principles.
- Mindset: — Don’t rush in. Have a positive, open mind and take all the time you need. It could take two-three weeks to hire the right person.
- Detail: — Write your job description from the applicant’s perspective. What will your ideal editor be looking for? Mention your situation, specific needs and the outcome. Include length of job, personal qualities required, request samples and give clear instructions for what they should do next.
- Widen the option pool: — interview several promising candidates by shortlisting; hire those people for a mini editing project. Tailor this project so that you discover if they can deliver the services you need. Yes, this uses your time, energy and money but it’s worth it to get the right hire for your company.
- Base your decision on the sample job quality: — If you’ve put the effort into producing the right test sample, the best person will surface. Remember, they’ll be judging you too, by your delivery and processes. Let the unsuccessful candidates know your decision asap.
- Keep the lines of communication open with other great candidates: — You may want to hire another one at a later date, so be positive and communicate that.
- Expect teething problems while they settle into your organisation: — communicate your expectations and procedures clearly right from the start. Don’t freak out over mistakes – they’re inevitable.
- Use the sandwich technique for feedback: — Give positive feedback, improvements needed and finish with a positive comment.
- Be realistic: — Don’t give a new editor tight deadlines. Ensure you have plenty of videos ready to go so that the hiring process hasn’t left you pressured for content.
Even after all this work, it will take time to settle your new editor into their role. Be clear, communicative and positive and you should end up with the dream video editor you always wanted.
